Are you at risk for sleep apnea? This is a sleeping disorder caused by irregular breathing in consequence of either central or obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive occurs when there is something blocking the airway which is typically soft tissues, whereas central sleep apnea is brain signals failing to send messages to muscles to breath. Dr. Edward Brandon and our associates want to help you get the sleep apnea care you need to get a better sleep tonight.

Many different factors can cause risks for sleep apnea. It is more common in men and women over the age of 40. Other risks include having a family history of apnea, large tonsils/tongue, being overweight, a small jaw, or a nasal obstruction from a deviated septum, a sinus problem, or allergies. This can lead to different health problem results, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, worsening of ADHD, depression, or lead up to a stroke, heart attack, heart failure, or irregular heartbeat.

Today, there are different methods of treatments for sleep apnea. This includes:

– Adjusting your sleeping habits (not sleeping on your back),

– A CPAP device (continuous positive air pressure device used to improve breathing, supplying air through nasal passages),

– An oral appliance (supports the jaw to prevent your airway from collapsing), or

– Surgery; this option may be used when no other method works, and depends on the area of the throat or mouth.
